Domino's franchisee gives away 2,000 pizzas

Fred Minnick

08 Dec 2006

Think your food costs are high? Well, think again.

An Alabama Domino's Pizza franchisee will give away 2,000 medium one-topping pies Dec. 11-12 to the 8,000 citizens of Guntersville, Ala. The giveaway is in celebration of the local football team's 4A State Championship.

Although Domino's won't be setting any world delivery records here — Papa John's set that mark when it delivered 13,500 pizzas to one function in June — the Guntersville residents certainly appreciate the gesture.

"Nobody in our county has ever made it this far in the playoffs, and football is king here. So when we started winning, we knew we had to do something," said Jason Upton, the four-unit Domino's operator. "We are all just so proud of our team. And this is a small town, so people want to celebrate."

Upton said the free pizza will cost roughly $3,500. But he's already seeing a return on investment.

"The local media are just loving it," Upton said. "I've interviewed with numerous television stations and newspapers."

Upton announced the free pizza deal before Guntersville played the the state championship game Dec. 7. So win or lose, folks were getting free pizza.

"During the game, when they showed our team, they mentioned our promotion on the JumboTron," Upton said. "That was pretty cool."

Upton said Domino's corporate knew about the promotion. "They thought it was a great idea."
