The outbreak of salmonella poisoning linked to raw tomatoes has prompted health departments to issue advisories and restaurants to pull the item from its menu.
redOrbit: Jack In The Box restaurants has announced that the San Diego-based company has temporarily stopped using raw tomatoes on everything from burgers to salads after federal health officials issued a warning about the fruit being tied to illnesses sweeping several states.
The number of salmonella cases linked to raw tomatoes grew this week with the main outbreak hitting Texas and New Mexico, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
CBS2.com: Southern California fast-food restaurants, including McDonald's and Jack in the Box, have complied with an advisory from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for consumers not to eat plum, Roma or round red tomatoes, all of which were implicated in the outbreak caused by an uncommon type of salmonella bacteria. El Paso Times: A few restaurants in El Paso, Texas, including Sonic, Jack in the Box and Burger King, have pulled tomatoes from their menus, while others, such as Veggie Good and Whataburger, continue to serve them.
According to the New Mexico Department of Health, 40 people in 10 New Mexico counties have fallen ill with a strain of salmonella called Salmonella "Saintpaul." So far, no one has died.
