Bland sales have led McDonald's to pull its highly marketed Spicy Chicken Sandwich.
 
Seizing the moment, Wendy's bragged about the success of its spicy chicken offerings, saying "We have defended our spicy chicken successfully against competitive intrusion." (Read also Wendy's 'jacks' up spicy chicken choices)

Amid high hopes, McDonald's launched its sandwich in January, but company spokesman Bill Whitman said the results from its half-year run did not meet requirements to ensure its place on the menu.

The sandwich will remain available in some markets and return in others as a limited-time offer.
