DETROIT — McDonald's claims it leads the U.S. foodservice industry in sales of chicken strips and chicken sandwiches. The company said it sells more than 600 million pounds of chicken each year.
In 2005, according to a news release, McDonald's recorded a 27-percent share of chicken sandwiches, more than its top three competitors combined.
According to an InsightExpress online survey, 85 percent of Americans say they like foods that are "bold, hot and spicy." McDonald's expects its new Spicy Premium Chicken Sandwich to attract consumers looking for spicy chicken. The new Spicy Premium Chicken Sandwich combines smoked Jalapeno, Cayenne pepper and other spices to deliver a distinctly bold new taste. The crispy chicken breast is served on a warm honey wheat roll with crisp lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise.
The franchise is in Detroit for its "Spicy Hot Spot" Tour. As part of the spicy chicken sandwich's nationwide launch, customers can sample the new sandwich in southeast Michigan. The tour will travel to 14 select cities to help promote this latest addition to McDonald's menu.
