DUBLIN, Ohio, Sep 19, 2005 (CCNMatthews via COMTEX) -- Wendy's International, Inc. announced today that Tom Mueller has resigned as president and chief operating officer of Wendy's effective today. Mueller led Wendy's North America business and the International division. Mueller joined Wendy's in 1998 as senior vice president of special projects following a lengthy career at Burger King. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jack Schuessler will assume the president's role on an interim basis, overseeing Wendy's operations, marketing, research and development, and other functions, until a replacement is named. "We thank Tom for his dedicated service to Wendy's and wish him all the best in the future," said Schuessler. Wendy's focused on improving sales and earnings "All of our company employees and franchisees are focused on improving Wendy's performance," said Schuessler, "and I will be taking an active day-to-day role in managing the business. We will reinvigorate sales growth with a fanatical approach to execution in the areas of restaurant operations, marketing and R&D." The Company recently announced several initiatives to improve Wendy's operating and financial performance, including plans to sell selected real estate to franchisees, close underperforming Wendy's restaurants, rebalance Wendy's U.S. and Canadian store mix, and slow new store development. Schuessler joined Wendy's in 1976 as a manager trainee and has worked in operations at the state, regional and divisional levels. He was Executive Vice President, Wendy's U.S. Operations from 1995-1997, and President and Chief Operating Officer, Wendy's U.S. from 1997-2000. Schuessler was named Chief Executive Officer and President in March 2000, and Chairman of Board in May 2001.
