DUBLIN, Ohio, July 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/-- As part of an ongoing commitment to providing nutritious choices on its menu, Wendy's announced today it is: * Launching new milk and fruit cup Kids' Meal options * Stepping up marketing efforts behind a combo meal test, offering customers a chili, a baked potato or side salad instead of French fries at no additional charge. Wendy's will now offer customers the option of substituting milk and a fruit cup for soft drinks and French fries in their Kids' Meals. The national roll-out this week follows a successful nine-month test at 420 Wendy's restaurants in Columbus, Ohio; Miami; Philadelphia; and Raleigh, N.C. "We're continuing to look for new opportunities to help families find ways to balance their diets through varied, nutritious menu options," said Tom Mueller, president, Wendy's North America. "The milk and fruit cup are choices that kids like and parents have told us they appreciate." When ordering a Wendy's Kids' Meal, families can now substitute eight-ounce, single-serve plastic containers of reduced fat (2%) white or lowfat (1%) chocolate milk and a mandarin orange fruit cup -- at no additional charge. The items can also be ordered a la carte. "The National Dairy Council is excited that Wendy's is not only offering milk in flavors, like chocolate, in new, kid-friendly packaging, but that they're helping remind families how many servings of dairy they need each day by including the 3-A-Day of Dairy logo on their milk labels," said Gregory D. Miller, Ph.D., M.A.C.N., senior vice president of Nutrition and Scientific Affairs for the National Dairy Council. Health professionals agree that calcium found in milk and dairy products is essential for growing children. Switching the French fries in the Kids' Meal line-up for a fruit cup can help children reach the recommended five-to-nine-a-day servings of fruits and vegetables. Starting next month Wendy's will add Baton Rouge as another test market for the combo meal program where customers can substitute chili, a baked potato or side salad in place of French fries. Wendy's also continues to actively test the concept in New Orleans, Portland, Ore., and Charleston, W. Va. In August, an extensive wave of local television and radio advertising will be launched to support the test.
