National Ice Cream Month just became a little more bittersweet. Baskin-Robbins opened its doors 65 years ago and to mark the milestone, the world's largest ice cream chain will retire five of its signature flavors. Entering Baskin-Robbins' famous "Deep Freeze" will be French Vanilla, Caramel Praline Cheesecake, Campfire S'mores, Apple Pie a La Mode and Superfudge Truffle.
The retirement of these flavors will make way for more "innovative" flavors, the company said in a news release.
The retiring flavors and their history include:
- French Vanilla, created in 1945 by Irv Robbins and Burt Baskin, is a classic vanilla ice cream made with egg yolks
- Caramel Praline Cheesecake, introduced in 1970, features vanilla cheesecake ice cream swirled with a caramel ribbon and pralined pecans
- Campfire S'mores, added In 1975, is a milk chocolate ice cream with marshmallow ribbon and graham cracker bits
- Apple Pie a La Mode, launched in 1976, features vanilla ice cream with real apple, crunchy pie crust and caramel cinnamon creme ribbon
- Superfudge Truffle came about in 2007, with chocolate fudge ice cream, chunks of chocolate ganache and toffee truffle pieces
There are more than 1,000 flavors in Baskin-Robbins' global repertoire. Flavors that have already been added to the Deep Freeze include Miami Ice, Lunar Cheesecake and Beatle Nut.
