With the halfway mark of 2010 coming and going, the Subway restaurant chain has 1,000 reasons to be excited. The chain announced in a press release that it has opened more than 1,000 new locations around the world, crossing 33,000 locations total.
Additionally, since April, Subway's new breakfast menu has been implemented at about 25,000 shops throughout the United States and Canada. This rollout made the Subway chain North America's largest purveyor of breakfast sandwiches.
Of the 1,000 new stores this year, 60 were opened in Canada; 25 in Australia; 77 in Brazil; 27 in France; and 100 in both Taiwan and Russia. Also, Mexico and the United Kingdom each opened 37 new stores; China has 21 new Subways; India has 19; and Japan and the United Arab Emirates both opened 15 new stores so far this year.
In the U.S., Subway added 490 new franchisees. More than 23,000 Subway stores are franchised.
Subway has also embraced its non-traditional development, opening new locations in airports, department stores, college campuses, hospitals and parks.
This year saw the opening of a Subway store in a Toyota showroom in California, and on the MS Stolzenfels, a boat in Germany.
Also, a multi-unit Subway franchise - owned by Richard Schragger - opened on a crane alongside the construction of One World Trade Center, also known as Freedom Tower. The store provides meals for construction workers working throughout the 108 stories. When finished, the tower will stand at 1,776 feet, making it the largest building in the country.
