Catering to the large vegetarian population in India, KFC India has started to offer a meatless version of its signature Zinger Burger.
According to the Financial Chronicle KFC hopes to add close 20 percent in sales through the rest of 2010 with the new item.
The introduction of the Veggie Zinger Burger is consistent with the company's strategy in India, originally outlined in late 2009.
The plan also includes opening more than 100 stores in the country by 2015, with a Mexican-inspired menu that features "spiced up" flavors and 20 vegetarian products.
The quick-service restaurant industry is growing by about 25 percent per year in India.
Traditional Indian cuisine offers a wide variety of vegetarian options to cater to the country's large Hindu population, which encourages the diet.
An estimated 30 percent of QSR customers in the country is vegetarian.
KFC currently has 77 stores in India.
