This week, KFC presented executives from Susan G. Komen for the Cure with a check for more than $4.2 million, the single largest donation in the organization's history.
The money was raised by KFC franchisees and operators throughout April and May during the company's "Buckets for the Cure" campaign. A total of 5,000 restaurants in the U.S. participated.
Buckets for the Cure featured special pink versions of KFC's iconic buckets. Also, the KFC headquarters in Louisville, Ky., was lit up with pink lights, and a Louisville restaurant was painted pink.
For every pink bucket sold, KFC operators donated 50 cents toward the campaign.
Twenty-five percent of the funds raised from the promotion go toward local Susan G. Komen for the Cure affiliates. Those funds will be used for breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs.
"'Buckets for the Cure' helped to reach hundreds of thousands of people with breast cancer information while raising funds for the research and community outreach programs that support women and men with breast cancer," said Mark Nadolny, chief financial officer for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, who accepted the check on behalf of the organization. "We are grateful for the participation of KFC and its customers."
