KFC outlets in Nuneaton and Cannock, United Kingdom are testing minature projection systems that offer touch screen technology in the restaurants' tables and walls.
The systems were created by Light Blue Optics, a company founded by Cambridge University students about six years ago.
According to the Daily Telegraph, the trials are already underway at two KFC restaurants with an objective of assessing customers' reactions to applications offered by the technology.
The tests focus on multimedia applications that are projected onto 10-inch touch screens and include restaurant menus and spill-proof order screens in the kitchens.
Ideally, the next step will include a touch screen ordering system. The technology is also being used in other industries, including car satellite navigation systems, camcorders and mobile phones.
Whether or not the technology will rollout across the ocean is yet to be determined.
"The technology is being evaluated in two KFC restaurants in the U.K. KFC U.S. is being kept updated on the test. That's all there is to report at this early stage," said Rick Maynard, spokesperson for KFC U.S.
