Dunkin’ Donuts seems to have a hand in fueling the city that never sleeps. The pastry/coffee chain expanded by 9 percent in New York City in 2010.
This growth puts the total number of Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants across the five boroughs – Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island – at 466; 77 more than No. 2 Subway, and 210 more than No. 3 Starbucks.
According to Crain’s New York, this is the third straight year Dunkin’ Donuts has topped the list of chain retailers in the city.
It was the third annual ranking of national chains in NYC, with cell phone stores showing the strongest growth. There are 280 national retailers in the city operating 6,335 locations, which is a 4 percent increase from 2009.
Foodservice establishments account for 21 percent of private sector jobs added in the city in 2010. After Dunkin’ Donuts, Subway and Starbucks, Duane Reade (pharmacy) came in at No. 4, while McDonald’s dropped from third to fifth, decreasing unit counts by 7 percent.
Other chains that decreased their presence in the Big Apple include Pizza Hut, which fell 25 percent to 15 stores, and Tasti-D-Lite, which dropped by 37 percent to 26 stores.
