While several fast casual restaurants have successfully played on the Greek food concept, Subway appears to want in on the game. According to the chain's website, the falafel sandwich is currently being tested in the Chicago area.

The new item even has a Facebook page with a fledgling group of followers begging the company to extend the test nationwide and into Canada.

Vegetarians have applauded the experiment. On the "This Dish is Vegetarian" blog, author Eric Fortney said "anytime a major eating establishment decided to offer a new plant-based selection that doesn't involve just slapping a piece of lettuce on a dry bun, it's big news."

Subway's version of this Greek staple sticks closely to the script, with cucumber sauce and chickpea-based balls. It is available with a choice of vegetables on a sub or flatbread.

Healthy tips offered

Also, via its website, Subway is now offering tips to help consumers make informed meal choices and stay active.

The chain has long provided nutritional information online and in-store, but is adding a column, "Start the New Year with the Right Choices," written by Subway Corporate dietitian Lannette Kovachi, MS, RD, and easy, fun activity tips from Carol Kur, MS, RD, co-founder of the Personal Training Institute.

The column provides insights into better choices to be made for each meal of the day, including dessert.

Additionally, educational and motivational videos by JJ Virgin, creator of the Weight Loss Resistance Revolution, have been added to the menu and nutrition section of Subway's website.

Subway's Facebook page is also embracing a healthy theme, offering a weight-loss support discussion group for those trying to achieve their 2011 dietary goals.

"This is a time of year when a lot of people make resolutions to achieve a healthier lifestyle," Kovachi said. "That is something some find is easier said than done, but can definitely be accomplished if you set your mind to it and have a plan to achieve your goals. I am hoping the tips we provide can help people have a happy and healthful 2011."

Subway has long touted a healthier perspective, offering a line of sandwiches and salads with 6 grams of fat or less; FRESH FIT meals for kids and adults; sponsoring initiatives of the American Heart Association; and spreading the story of Jared Fogle, a customer who lost and kept off 245 pounds while following an exercise program and Subway diet.
