The Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation has awarded grants and scholarships to nearly 180 Connecticut organizations for the 13th year in a row.

The foundation, created by Fred DeLuca, president and co-founder of Subway restaurants, focuses on education, job training and the arts, with money awarded to assist public charities, nonprofit organizations, community associations and high school scholarship programs. Subway is headquartered in Milford, Conn.

"I'm very pleased that we are able to lend a hand to deserving regional schools and associations by allocating more of our grant resources than ever before," said DeLuca.

Grants have been directed to organizations, schools and teaching programs throughout the Constitution State, including the Beth-El Center (Milford), Burroughs Community Center (Bridgeport), Cooperative Educational Services (Trumbull), Community Health Network of CT (Wallingford), Literacy Volunteers  of America (Danbury and Waterbury), Read To Grow Inc. (Branford), STRIVE New Haven Inc., the Agape Society (Fairfield) and Special Olympics CT (Trumbull).

Twenty-nine scholarships were granted to high schools and colleges throughout central and western Connecticut. Two scholarships each were presented to the Connecticut Hospitality Educational Foundation and the Greater New Haven Chamber Foundation, while the University of Bridgeport (DeLuca's alma mater) also received a scholarship award.

The year 2011 marks the second time that the Community Culinary School of Northwest Connecticut has received a Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation gift.

Grants were also extended to 33 associations — some of whom received multiple gifts — where more than 80 Subway corporate headquarters' employees volunteer their time. These include the Coordinating Council for Children in Crisis Inc., Pet Protectors Inc., the Children's Tumor Foundation, the Literacy Center of Milford, Bridges Community Support System and the Tommy Fund for Childhood Cancer, among others.
