Manasquan, N.J.-based Jersey Mike’s Subs is marking its 55th year in business with its biggest fundraiser to date.

Throughout March, the nearly 500-unit sandwich franchise will team up with more than 60 charities throughout the United States for its “Month of Giving” initiative. The effort will culminate with the national “Make a Difference Day” March 28.

Customers can make a donation to local charities at any Jersey Mike’s unit. Those who make a $5 donation will receive six specially-branded Jersey Mike’s Silly Bandz and a coupon for a free chip and drink.

All of the proceeds from Silly Bandz sales also will be donated to local charities.

Then, on March 28, residents are invited to join a nationwide celebration to help support local charities. With a minimum contribution of $1, consumers will receive a free regular sub in some markets, or a “buy one regular sub, get one free” offer in others.

Additionally, some Jersey Mike’s locations will host charity representatives, music, balloons and more on “Make a Difference Day.”

The more than 60 beneficiaries will benefit from the fundraising effort, including local chapters of national charities such as the American Red Cross and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, as well as smaller organizations devoted to helping children, the homeless and the hungry.

All donations will stay in local markets, and a portion of Jersey Mike’s sales during the month also will be donated.

“So many deserving charities have been forced to slash their budgets and by joining with our customers we can help them continue their good work,” said Peter Cancro, founder and CEO of Jersey Mike’s Subs.

It is a year of milestones for the company that started in Point Pleasant Beach, N.J. in 1956. Jersey Mike’s is opening its 50th store in the Los Angeles market this year and is now in most major markets in the U.S.
