Wendy’s franchisee settles discrimination suit

Restwend LLC, operator of about 15 Wendy's restaurants in Maine, has paid more than $17,000 to settle a discrimination suit involving one of its unit managers refusing to hire people who weren't U.S. citizens.

According to The Republic, the U.S. Justice Department's investigation found that one of Restwend's Wendy's restaurants implemented a policy of hiring only U.S. citizens and rejecting those believed not to be U.S. citizens.

Hiring authorized workers on the basis of citizenship status is prohibited under the Immigration and Nationality Act.

Restwend's settlement payment covers back pay, plus interest, as well as civil penalties. Restwend is based in Augusta, Maine and was established in 1985.
