S.C. Subway employees honored for heroism

Two Spartanburg, S.C. Subway employees have been recognized by the South Carolina Highway Patrol as "Highway Patrol Heroes" after assisting in a car accident outside of their restaurant.

The Highway Patrol sometimes presents a certificate of bravery to citizens who go out of their way to help someone involved in a motor vehicle collision.

The employees, Quentin Cagle and Ryan Sherwood, witnessed a collision involving a minivan and an 18-wheeler, in which 15-year-old Paul Fouriezos had been ejected and partially trapped beneath the overturned vehicle.

While onlookers called 9-1-1, Cagle and Sherwood lifted the minivan off the trapped teen, holding it in the air until paramedics arrived. Fouriezos broke his back and ankle in the accident, however is recovering well.

"We think this is a miraculous and courageous act on the part of these two men. We are so grateful that they were in the right place at the right time because their actions likely saved this young man's life or reduced the extent of his injury. They are the true definition of a Highway Patrol Hero," said South Carolina Highway Patrol Col. Kenny Lancaster Jr.

The ceremony was also attended by Subway franchisee Matt Banish and Subway development agent Ali Saifi.

Cagle and Sherwood were also honored by a joint resolution recognizing their outstanding citizenship from the South Carolina House of Representatives.

Those two young men saved my grandson Paul's life. Our family is so grateful for their courage and their self-sacrifice. May God bless them as they have blessed our family.
