Feeling heat from the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), Krispy Kreme will soon switch its food supply chain to include cage-free eggs.
According to Triple Pundit, the company will begin transitioning to cage-free eggs beginning next week.
In 2010, the HSUS purchased Krispy Kreme stock to try and sway the chain to abandon egg suppliers that confine hens in small spaces or subject them to inhumane conditions. The organization also sent an employee to Krispy Kreme's annual shareholder meeting last year to make the case for a cage-free supply chain.
Another HSUS employee, Kristie Middleton, corporate policy and supply chain manager, will speak at this year's Krispy Kreme shareholder meeting June 14 to thank the company for making the change.
Krispy Kreme is the latest QSR to start using cage-free egg suppliers. Whataburger joined the cage-free movement earlier this year and other chains, such as Sonic and Wendy's, have also made the switch. In 2010, California signed into law a bill that would require all eggs sold in the state as of Jan. 1, 2015, to be cage-free.
