McDonald's U.K. has tapped fashion designer Wayne Hemingway to conceive a 100-percent recycled uniform for its 85,000 staff members in time for the 2012 Olympic Games, which will be held in London.
According to the Guardian, the uniforms will be part of Hemingway's Worn Again label, which "upcycles" clothes; meaning clothes are collected in store, reprocessed into raw materials and then made into new uniforms.
The new design will make its debut in London before the Olympics kick off and will be rolled out to all 1,200 restaurants in the McDonald's UK system shortly thereafter.
McDonald's UK representatives said the closed-loop design is a first for Britain.
Hemingway, who founded Red or Dead with his wife Geraldine, said the sustainable uniform will draw design elements from McDonald's interiors, with natural colors and green and red highlights.
The uniform makeover is part of McDonald's ongoing green initiatives. For example, last month, the McDonald's Europe switched to a sustainable fish supply.
