A Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak that affected consumers in 10 states has been linked to Taco Bell.
According to Food Safety News, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a report on Jan. 19 confirming that the chain was the culprit in the outbreak that affected guests in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico and Tennessee.
Texas (43 cases) and Oklahoma (16) were by far the most affected. Consumers in Oklahoma reported illness from Oct. 21 to Nov. 18. Half of the 16 victims specifically reported consuming food at one Taco Bell restaurant.
The CDC declined to name Taco Bell initially, saying there was no public health reason to do so. At the time of its report, 68 individuals were infected with the strain.
Taco Bell has 5,600 units in the U.S. with 36.8 million customers each week.
