McDonald's Japan is testing a service that will allow customers to place food orders en route to a drive-thru unit by using their car navigation systems.
According to Nikkei, the test is in collaboration with Japan's Highway Industry Development Organization.
The initial research will be conducted with eight cars and a McDonald's restaurant in Ibaraki Prefecture, from March 5-16. When the vehicles enter a region covered by an "Intelligence Transport System (ITS)," a McDonald's menu will appear on the navigation system. The users will be able to order items on the system's touchscreen, and pay with their credit cards through compatible devices in their cars.
An ITS offers real-time traffic data and other information. The ITS and POS will be managed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. and Panasonic System Networks Co.
The equipment and car navigation systems will be provided by Toyota and Pioneer Corp.
According to the story, McDonald's believes that cutting time in a drive-thru line will attract more customers.
