Subway was one of the first chains to test gluten-free offerings in the U.S., and now the QSR is testing vegan sandwiches in select markets.
The Huffington Post reported that animal advocacy group Compassion Over Killing convinced Subway operators in Canada to sell a vegan patty, called "Totally Vegged."
The vegan menu is now being offered as part of a limited test in eight café restaurants in Maryland, DC and Virginia.
Starting this week, those eight units are featuring three new all-vegan savory sandwiches: Sweet Riblet, Malibu Greek and Italian Black Bean.
Currently, Subway doesn't have plans to roll out any vegan menu items nationally, according to a spokesperson.
Compassion Over Killing has launched a website, WeLoveSubway.com, to get more vegans to request Subway to agree to a broader rollout of the new items. There are currently more than 6,000 comments on the site.
Subway's spokesperson added, "(Subway's) research and development team is always looking for new products to add to their menus that are delicious and wholesome. The source of these great product ideas come from a wide range of people, including customers, their new product development staff or, as in this case, franchisees. Products go through a rigorous testing process before they make it into a Subway restaurant, including a complete inspection by our food scientists, scrutiny by our dietitian and team of chefs and bakers, and testing in select markets, where customers have the final say as to what actually makes its way to the national Subway menu."
Subway debuted vegan patties in Canada in November 2011.
