McDonald's has unveiled its employee uniforms for the London Summer Olympic Games – the company's first sustainable uniforms.
According to Business Green, they were created by British fashion designer Wayne Hemingway, who was advised by Worn Again, an environmental consultant. The uniforms are mustard yellow, gherkin green and black, and have a retro feel inspired by the popular television show Mad Men.
The uniforms feature closed loop compatible and recyclable materials, reducing landfill waste when they're no longer wearable. More than 2,000 McDonald's employees will wear the new design at the company's four Olympic Park restaurants during the Olympics later this summer.
After the Closing Ceremonies, McDonald's UK's 87,500 employees will continue to wear the new uniforms. Old uniforms will be recycled for use by the automobile and furniture industries.
In April, McDonald's announced its support of the London Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games' (LOCOG's) objective to deliver the most sustainable Games possible.
As a Worldwide Sponsor and Official Restaurant of the Olympic Games, McDonald's will highlight various aspects of its sustainability efforts during and leading up to the event.
In addition to the eco-friendly uniforms, McDonald's will recycle and reuse 100 percent of the furniture and equipment, and nearly all of the building materials, from its four restaurants, to be used for future and existing locations. All types of materials -- from the beams to the wiring to the kitchen equipment -- will be labeled for sorting and relocating to future destinations following the event.
Also, among other efforts, used cooking oil from the McDonald's Olympic venue restaurants will be converted into biodiesel to fuel the company's delivery trucks.
