Domino's Pizza and McDonald's are two of about 70 companies in the United Kingdom that have committed to the Hospitality and Food Service Agreement, and to cutting food and packaging waste by 5 percent by 2015.
The agreement was introduced by the Waste and Resources Action Program (WRAP) and also includes a goal to increase recycling and composting.
According to EnvironmentalLeader.com, this should equate to about 100 million meals.
The 5 percent reduction goal will be measured by carbon dioxide emissions against 2012 numbers.
According to WRAP, if 25 percent of the food sector committed to meeting the targets in the agreement, they could save up to £76 million ($118 million) and reduce CO2e impact by 570,000 tons by the end of 2015.
Organizations that sign the agreement can join as signatories or supporters, depending on their role within the food sector. The 28 signatories include McDonald's and Domino's Pizza. WRAP will provide online tools, workshops, working groups and expert advice to help the businesses meet their goals.
A supporter is an organization that works within the sector but is not delivering food directly to a customer.
