Ohio-based Freshway Foods has voluntarily recalled more than 6,600 pounds of sliced apples due to possible Listeria contamination. According to the Food Poisoning Bulletin, the apples are sold under the Sonic brand and distributed to units in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, New York, North Carolina, Tennessee and Wisconsin.
No illnesses have been reported thus far. The company is taking precautions due to a possibly contaminated machine.
Listeria, or Listeriosis, causes symptoms such as fever and muscle aches, headache and stiff neck.
The Sonic products under recall include 2.4-ounce packages of red apple slices with the use by date of Nov. 30, distributed in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, New York, Tennessee and Wisconsin.
Sonic was one of the first quick-service brands to offer apple slices as a side item, introducing the offering in 2009.
