Arby's has joined the growing list of major quick-service brands that have committed to phasing out the use of gestation crates in their supply chain.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Arby's posted the announcement this week on its website, which read:
"Arby's is committed to only working with suppliers who have policies in place to work towards the elimination of gestation crates on sow farms. We believe there are more humane and sustainable alternatives to gestation crates and are actively collaborating with our suppliers to implement solutions that align with our company's commitment to animal welfare."
Gestation crates confine mother pigs during their four-month pregnancy, prohibiting them from turning around, according to the Humane Society of the United States. Subway, McDonald's, Tim Hortons, Burger King, Sonic, Wendy's and other chains have also committed to the use of more humane cages this year.
