Subway, which currently has about 38,800 units worldwide, could very well hit the 50,000-unit mark by 2017. According to co-founder and president Fred DeLuca, Subway is "relatively easy to expand" because of its name brand and traction.
DeLuca told Bloomberg, the chain is planning to open about 300 stores each in India, China and Japan during the next three years. Subway passed McDonald's in 2012 as the largest restaurant chain by unit. McDonald's has about 34,480 outlets globally.
$3 subs on the horizon
Subway is joining the growing list of QSRs stepping up their value offerings and will feature a "Six-Inch Selects" promotion beginning in March that includes some 6-inch subs for $3. The deal was tested in some markets and is making its debut nationally this month with the oven roasted chicken sandwich, according to NBC News.
