Just days after employees from a variety of quick-service brands walked off the job in Detroit and St. Louis, workers in Milwaukee followed suit today.

Hundreds of QSR and retail workers are striking today at dozens of stores and restaurants throughout the city, including McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's and Taco Bell. They're calling for the minimum wage to be raised to $15 an hour as well as the right to form a union without retaliation.

The actions in Milwaukee follow last week's strikes in Detroit and St. Louis, as well as earlier strikes in New York City and Chicago.

According to a new release, low wage jobs have accounted for the bulk of new jobs added recently and the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that 7 out of 10 growth occupations throughout the next decade will be low wage.

In metro Milwaukee, roughly 100,000 family-sustaining manufacturing jobs have been lost since the early 1980s. Growth in food preparation jobs in the metro area is projected to be nearly triple the rate of overall employment yet many workers earn minimum wage, $7.25 an hour, or just above it.

Today's strike is being facilitated by the Milwaukee Workers Organizing Committee's "Raise Up MKE" campaign, which has a mission "to rebuild the city's economy by putting money back in the pockets of the men and women who work hard but still can't afford basic necessities such as food, clothing and rent."
