McDonald's has "firmly denied" rumors that it has avoided paying taxes on its approximately $3 billion of income in France. The chain has 314 restaurants in France.

French publication L'Express reported that the chain has "funneled the sum through its Swiss and Luxembourg subsidiaries," since 2009. Those markets have lower corporate profits tax rates.

L'Express said the evasion equals "several hundred million euros." French tax authorities searched McDonald's France's office in the fall.

The chain responded by "firmly" denying the report, and claiming it has paid 1 billion euros in taxes since 2009.
