The Subway Development Corp. of Washington (SDC) has surpassed the $1 million mark in its fundraising effort to benefit breast cancer research. This year's fundraising drive brought in $220,000 from the 12th Annual Subway Charity Golf Classic Tournament and $190,000 from sales of pink ribbons in its stores.
On Sept. 22, SDC development agent Larry Feldman, along with his SDC staff and franchisees, held their yearly fundraising drive and golf tournament at Westfields Golf Club in Clifton, Va. The money raised for the American Cancer Society marked a key milestone of $1.3 million raised to date.
"Subway Development Corporation is proud to be able to make this donation to the American Cancer Society," Feldman said in a news release. "With over 190,000 new cases of breast cancer in 2009, we continue to be passionate towards our fight against this disease."
In addition to the golf tournament, fundraising efforts were started in June at each of the nearly 1,100 Subway stores in the region. Over the past three months, thousands of customers purchased pink ribbons for $1 each at local Subway stores to create awareness about the risks of breast cancer.
The SDC has a long history of corporate giving in the Washington D.C. area. In addition to raising money for the American Cancer Society, SDC has supported organizations in the area such as the American Heart Association, Children's Hospital, Special Olympics, Juvenile Diabetes and the Center for Autistic Children.
