A recent report released by the Center for an Urban Future ranking the national retailers with stores in New York City has found that quick-service restaurant chains continue to dominate the business landscape in the city. The report also found that despite the economy, most of the top 12 retailers as of July 2008 expanded their presence in the city over the last year despite the economic challenges.
In its second annual report, the think tank found that Dunkin' Donuts continues to have the largest presence with 429 stores, a 26 percent increase over 341 stores last year.
Other QSR chains in the top 12, include:
- Subway, No. 2 with 361 stores, an 8 percent increase over 335 stores last year
- McDonald's, No. 3 with 258 stores, a 4 percent increase over 248 stores last year
- Baskin-Robbins, No. 6 with 207 stores, down 4 percent compared to 215 stores last year
Fast casual coffee chain Starbucks tied at No. 3 with McDonald's, with its presence up 10 percent over last year.
The report examines 277 national retailers that have two or more stores in the city, with breakdowns by borough and zip code.
