MCLEAN, Va. — Subway Development Corporation of Washington (SDC) has announced that president and CEO Larry Feldman was named winner of the Philanthropy Award in the category of CEO Leadership for Small Business by the Washington Business Journal. The awards ceremony was held at the Ritz Carlton Washington, D.C., on May 14, and recognized the top givers in the Washington, D.C., area.
Since the company's inception in 1978, Feldman and the SDC have been involved in charitable giving to multiple organizations, including the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, the Special Olympics and Children's Hospital. Each SDC employee also is given $500 to give to the charity of his or her choice and are encouraged to involved with that charity as well.
Last year, the SDC hosted its 11th annual golf tournament to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. Prior to the tournament, Subway raised money by selling pink ribbons in their stores for $1 each. Between the sale of the ribbons and the golf tournament, Subway was able to raise $150,000 for the American Cancer Society in 2008. The SDC has now raised nearly $1 million dollars over the 11 years the golf tournament has been held. The 12th annual golf tournament will be held in late September 2009.
