Kathy Freston, author of "Quantum Wellness: A Practical and Spiritual Guide to Health and Happiness," has created a petition on Change.org asking McDonald's executives to offer a "healthy, meatless option."
The petition is addressed to Don Thompson, McDonald's CEO; Jeff Stratton, President; Tim Fenton, COO; J.C. Gonzalez-Mendez, SVP, Global CSR, Sustainability and Philanthropy; Greg Watson, SVP, Menu Innovation; Cindy Goody, PhD, MBA, RD, LDN, Senior Director of Nutrition; and Julia Braun, Director of Nutrition, Menu Innovation Team.
It reads as follows:
"It's Time For A Healthy, Meatless Option (Please!) Consumer demand for plant-based foods continues to rise. I urge you to add a meatless protein-centric option to the menu. You have veggie wraps in Canada and Europe, Tropical Smoothie has vegan chicken wraps, and Burger King has a veggie burger. Why not offer "something for everyone" here in America, too?
While you're at it, might you take the beef flavoring out of the fries, too? Thank you in advance!!"
Freston, a New York Times best-selling author ("The One") who has talked about healthy living and conscious eating topics on TV with Ellen Degeneres, Oprah Winfrey, Dr. Oz and others, said McDonald's could benefit from a meatless option.
"Sales of meat substitutes in the U.S. bring in over $553 million a year," she wrote, adding that competitors such as Chipotle, Subway, KFC Canada and Burger King have such meatless options.
The Ellen DeGeneres Show's Facebook page directed fans to Freston's page on Thursday, and the post has since received nearly 20,000 likes.
