As part of its extensive menu enhancement efforts, Burger King is testing premium entrée salads and breakfast burritos in select markets.
According to Burger Business, Burger King hasn't been in the entree salad space since 2004.
The new Garden Fresh Salad line includes a Chicken BLT, selling for $5.39 in the Chicago market; Chicken, Apple & Cranberry ($5.39) and Crisp Chicken Caesar ($4.99).
As of right now, Burger King's national menu only includes Tendergrill and Tendercrisp Garden Salads with chicken and a small side salad.
Burger King also is expanding its chicken line to include Chicken Strips, sold at three for $2.39 or five for $4.49, and Crispy Chicken Snack Wraps, which come in honey mustard and ranch flavors for $1.59 each.
For breakfast, the chain is testing Southwestern Burritos, with sausage, cheese, hashbrown nuggets and egg, for $2.49, and a snack-wrap-sized Sausage Burrito for $1.
Cinnabon buns – baked on site – also are available for $1.79 apiece.
Additionally, Burger King is throwing its hat into the fruit smoothie ring, with strawberry banana and mango flavors, and is trying out caramel and mocha frappes.
Burger King first announced these tests during its second quarter 2011 earnings call in August 2011. At that time, Jonathan Fitzpatrick, executive vice-president, chief brand and operations officer, said various products, such as oatmeal, smoothies, coffees and salads, are currently in test at about 100 locations in various markets.
"We're only 30 days into these tests and are still ironing out the equipment, crew training and supply chain issues. We're encouraged with the early results and will continue the tests through the end of the calendar year," he said. "If I had to guess, (one year from now), 20 to 35 percent of our menu could be new."
Chain debuts in Antigua
Also this week, Burger King Corp. and franchisee Island Burger Ltd., announced the opening of the first Burger King restaurant in Antigua, in the heart of Saint John's Parish.
"This new market entry is part of our overall growth plan to increase our brand presence in the LAC region. We look forward to a long and successful future in the market," said Jose Tomas, president for Latin America/Caribbean Region.
As part of this agreement, an additional three restaurants will open on the island.
"We are very excited to open our first location in downtown Saint John's and being part of the Burger King business," said Stuart Wexelman, president, Island Burger Ltd. "We are thrilled with the location and the affordable, great tasting and better for you menu options that we have available for our guests."
The 2,000-square-foot restaurant features the brand's new 20/20 restaurant image.
