Chick-fil-A 'Appreciation Day' yields record sales

Wednesday's Chick-fil-A "Appreciation Day" set a single-day sales record at the Atlanta-based chain. The event, the brainchild of former presidential candidate and Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, was created in response to the controversy sparked by the chain's president and COO Dan Cathy's statements against gay marriage.

Steve Robinson, Chick-fil-A's executive vice president of Marketing, told CNN that it was a record-setting day, although specific sales numbers weren't released from the private company.

Since Cathy's interview in July, Chick-fil-A's social media sites have been flooded with company support and opposition. Additionally, his comments sparked numerous protests and boycotts, and inspired mayors from Chicago and Boston, as well as seven universities, to block or remove the chain from their markets.

Chick-fil-A also has had its share of supporters, including Huckabee, former presidential candidate Rick Santorum, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
