Good Times begins restaurant remodeling effort

Same-store sales at Good Times Restaurants Inc. were up 7.9 percent in March, on top of last year's 8.6 percent increase. This marks the Colorado-based chain's 20th consecutive month of same-store sales increases.

For the second quarter ended March 31, sales jumped 7.3 percent.

President and CEO Boyd Hoback attributes the growth to product initiatives and an increased focus on store-level communications.

"While March was unseasonably warm in Colorado and it helped boost our sales, we are particularly gratified to see continued sales growth without the benefit of any broadcast media in the second quarter," he said.

The chain will bring back its Cheech and Chong radio ads in late April, and also will introduce a new 5280 Lifestyle Menu with what Hoback calls "some really fun and funny ads," with the anticipation of growing transactions and average checks.

The company also reported that it has completed its first remodel of one restaurant and plans to reimage several more during fiscal 2012 and 2013 after some refinement of the design elements.

"The initial results from a relatively inexpensive exterior reimaging have been very positive, with a potential payback of less than a year. We are working on refining and optimizing each design element to apply to most of our restaurants over the rest of this year and next year to gain further consistency and brand image across the market, particularly in older stores," Hoback said.

The reimaging includes:

  • New menu boards
  • New sign faces
  • Exterior finishes including stacked stone
  • A new fascia band design
  • New point of purchase graphics
  • A new paint scheme
  • Patio enhancements

Good Times operates and franchises 43 restaurants, primarily in Colorado.
