KFC rolls out low-calorie kids' meal

March 28, 2013

KFC has launched the Li'l Bucket Kids Meal. Packaged in a smaller version of KFC's iconic bucket, the offering includes a Kentucky Grilled Chicken drumstick, green beans, a GoGo squeeZ applesauce on the go and a Capri Sun Roarin' Water.

This meal has 210 calories, 4 grams of fat and 565 mg of sodium.

"We've found that our fans are looking for meals that appeal to moms and kids in terms of options and taste," said Jason Marker, chief marketing officer for KFC U.S. "By pairing our freshly-prepared chicken choices with delicious, convenient fruit and KFC's famous sides, we've created a meal with balanced and kid-friendly options."

Li'l Bucket Kids Meals can be customized with other chicken choices, homestyle sides and drink options for $3.99 plus tax (pricing and participation may vary). Diners have a choice between a Kentucky Grilled Drumstick, four Original Recipe Bites, an Extra Crispy Tender or a Chicken Little.

KFC's marketing focuses on moms

With the Li'l Bucket Kids Meal launch, KFC is planning partnerships with "kid-friendly" brands throughout the year. For example, with its GoGo squeeZ partnership, the kid-sized bucket includes activities such as word puzzles and riddles.

KFC is also marketing the kids' meals toward both kids and moms.

"This is the 'thinking mom's' kids meal — one that is equal parts balanced options and interactive fun for their kids," Marker said. "Through our partnership with GoGo squeeZ, kids will find a fun secret under each Li'l Bucket lid – an activity to enjoy with the whole family."

KFC has also launched a Li'l Playground Makeover Facebook Contest and the KFC Ultimate Playground Experience Contest.

The Li'l Playground Makeover Facebook Contest began today and invites fans to enter for a chance to win a makeover for their local community playground. By submitting photos with a short story on facebook.com/kfc, families can tell KFC which playgrounds in their community are "in need of a good deed and a Li'l TLC."

Entries will also be accepted by submitting photos or videos through Twitter's Vine application or Instagram by using the hashtag #KFCPlaygrounds. From the entries, KFC will choose up to five neighborhoods to receive funds awarded to the playground operators to restore their play areas. Five finalists will also receive funds to cater their first neighborhood block party of the season at the local playground complete with Li'l Bucket Kids Meals.

Additionally, through April 30 families can enter for a chance to win the KFC Ultimate Playground Experience Sweepstakes by scanning the QR Code on the Li'l Bucket or visiting kfc.com/lilbucket. The KFC Ultimate Playground Experience Sweepstakes includes prizes such as funds for catering from KFC and an appearance from the GoGo squeeZ Mobile Playground. There will also be activities for all ages such as a rock climbing wall, interactive media zone, slide, craft table to make upcycled crafts from GoGo squeeZ pouches and more.
