McDonald’s global sales up again

McDonald’s Corporation announced global comparable sales growth of 3.9 percent in February, with a 5.1 percent boost from Europe’s division. Sales were up 2.7 percent in the U.S. and 4 percent in Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa (APMEA).

These numbers follow a strong January in which global comparable sales were up 5.3 percent.

In Europe, comparable sales were led by France, the U.K. and Russia. Unique premium menu offerings, including France's new premium beef campaign and the Big Tasty featured in the U.K., ongoing restaurant modernization and enhanced customer conveniences contributed to the month's results.

In the U.S., comparable sales were driven by continued strong demand for McCafe beverages and the new Fruit & Maple Oatmeal.

APMEA was fueled by sales growth in Japan and Australia, partly offset by China due to the timing of Chinese New Year. Across the segment, menu initiatives, including limited-time offers such as the Big America 2 promotion in Japan and the Value Lunch program in Australia, are resonating with customers.

Systemwide sales for the month increased 8.1 percent, or 5.2 percent in constant currencies.

We are pleased that more customers are finding their great restaurant experience at McDonald's."

McDonald’s now No. 2

After sitting on top of the global unit count for so long, McDonald’s has officially been dethroned. At the end of 2010, Subway had 33,749 restaurants throughout the world, compared to the Golden Arches’ 32,737.

Domestically, according to the Wall Street Journal, Subway’s unit count passed McDonald’s in the U.S. about nine years ago.

Subway’s growth is due, in large part, to its nontraditional locations such as movie theaters in India and Switzerland, a ferry terminal in Seattle, a riverboat in Germany, a ski resort in Finland, a zoo in Taiwan and more.
