Subway testing mobile ordering app, delivery

Subway restaurants in Orange County, Calif., are testing a new mobile app developed by ZippyYum that allows consumers to order meals using their iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad or Android device.

Once customers place their mobile order, they can pick it up at one of the 240 participating Subway stores throughout Orange County without waiting. They can also opt to have their meals delivered.

"Our free new mobile app takes online ordering to a whole new level," said Bob Grewal, development agent of Orange County at Subway. "Not only does it make ordering a Subway meal fast and convenient, it helps customers to make more appropriate choices based on their unique tastes, needs and preferences. There's nothing like it on the market."

Developed by ZippyYum, an application developer based in Orange County, the mobile app recreates the in-store experience by presenting every product and ingredient visually so customers can see their sandwiches being built in "real-time" as they select their favorite ingredients.

The app also allows customers to see the calorie count of their meal as they select products and ingredients; quickly find meals based on specific search criteria, such as "all sandwiches with 6 grams of fat or less" or "all sandwiches under 500 calories;" and save their favorite sandwich creations and meal combinations to enable one-click ordering.

"Unlike other online ordering apps that merely present customers with long, text-based menus and ask them to tick-off their selections, the Subway mobile app provides a highly interactive, responsive and visually stunning ordering process that puts customers in control," said Daniel Riscalla, founder of ZippyYum.

Designed specifically for mobile devices, the app was designed to be user friendly. Customers tap, swipe and pinch on images to view products and ingredients, and make their selections.

What's more, customers can pre-order meals for pick-up or delivery at a specific location, date and time. Customers can pick up their orders at one of the participating stores, or have it delivered to their home or office by select stores. One Subway store even delivers to pre-selected beaches along Laguna Beach via an eco-friendly, electric bike.

The mobile ordering app for Subway is available for free at Apple's App Store and Google's Android MarketPlace.
