Whataburger readies for operations, customer service competition

One-hundred Whataburger restaurants have been named as semifinalists in the company's "WhataGames" competition, held to test the skills of team members in three categories: operations, corporate history and customer service.

The teams, who beat out their competitors among Whataburger's more than 740 restaurants in 10 states, will continue to prove their skills through a series of elimination rounds to earn one of the 21 spots at the WhataGames Finals in Grapevine, Texas, in April. Finalists will compete in three days of competition for the Gold Medal and title of WhataGames 2013 Champion, as well as $165,000 in cash prizes.

"At Whataburger, we call our employees Family Members, and the biennial WhataGames is another great example of how we truly are a family and invest in each other," said Clifton Rutledge, chief operating officer of Whataburger Restaurants LLC. "It also has proven to be very successful as a training program, allowing our family members to become the best they can be in a really unique and exciting way."

The games were created in 1996 as a training exercise for operations to better serve customers.
