Baskin-Robbins, the hard-scoop ice cream leader, is known for its 31 signature flavors of hard-scoop ice cream. The product pipeline goes much deeper, with more than 1,000 flavors in its library.
In May 2008, Baskin-Robbins launched soft serve ice cream in select markets, making it the first national ice cream brand to offer both hard-scoop and soft serve ice cream. In May 2009, the soft serve line went national.
Baskin-Robbins is testing a new store model, the BR Express, a kiosk unit featuring soft serve only. There are 13 such stores in the system.
To promote the chain’s ice cream cakes, Baskin-Robbins’ 2009 promotion featured the song “Ice Cream and Cake” by the Buckwheat Boyz. The promotion also included a dance video contest and set a new Guinness World Record.
Dunkin’ Donuts has a full line of donuts, complemented by seasonal offerings as well. Donut varieties include glazed, filled and cake. The company is a market leader in the coffee, donut, bagel and muffin categories.
Coffee is an important Dunkin’ Donuts menu component. The chain’s coffees are freshly ground and brewed, using 100 percent Arabica beans. Last year, more than 226 million cups of iced coffee were sold, gaining ground on the classic brew.

In 2008, Dunkin’ Donuts also launched its DDSmart line, featuring better-for-you options. Later that year, the chain became the first quick-serve to offer egg-white sandwiches.
In fall 2009, Dunkin’ Donuts debuted low-fat muffins on its DDSmart menu. Following the initial LTO, Low Fat Apple Caramel Muffin, the chain kicked off 2010 with the Low Fat Cranberry Orange Muffin, shown here.
