This month, A&W is opening a new national learning center and prototype restaurant in Richmond, Kentucky, about 30 minutes east of its corporate headquarters in Lexington. The brand said in a news release that the structure is the first freestanding "Gen19" prototype with a nostalgic design that incorporates core A&W brand characteristics with contemporary elements, combining the brand's trademark orange with "earthy grays," retro neon signs, updated seating, efficiency improvements and pop art murals.

The facility also houses a new take on the franchisee and team member resource center, known as A&W University, including a classroom and hands-on experience in the adjoining restaurant. Training has taken place at the Lexington headquarters as well as a chain location in that city.

"Whether it's our freshly made root beer and floats or our food, A&W offers guests a unique menu and experience," CEO Kevin Bazner, said in the release. "This learning center is key to helping our franchisees succeed as they introduce the A&W brand to a new generation of guests."

The 100-year-old brand has 1,000 stores worldwide, including 70 locations added since the brand was purchased by its franchisees from Yum Brands in 2011.
