Bill would offer franchise rebate for veterans

September 9, 2009

U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock of Illinois has proposed a bill that would give military veterans a tax rebate for any franchise fees — and rebates to companies that offer discounts to them, according to a story in the Peoria, Ill., Journal Star. Veterans who want to open a franchise would get a tax rebate up to $12,500 for any fee required to open the business. In return, the parent company would get up to $12,500 if they offer a discount. The bill is currently in committee.

A number of restaurant chains offer incentives to military veterans as part of the International Franchise Association's Veterans Transition Franchise Initiative, also known as VetFran. For example, Dunkin' Donuts offers veterans a 20 percent reduction in its initial franchise fee.
