Burger King SpongeBob ad draws parents' ire

April 8, 2009

Marketing Daily: A Burger King ad promoting a new SpongeBob Square Pants BK Kids' Meal has drawn criticism from parents and the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood. The group has launched a letter-writing campaign demanding that Nickelodeon and Burger King immediately pull the new, "highly sexualized" TV ad.

The ad, which initially aired during the final game of the NCAA Men's Final Four, features Burger King's King singing a remix of Sir Mix-A-Lot's 1990s hit song "Baby Got Back."

Burger King issued a response stating that the ad is intended to appeal to adults who take their children to Burger King and a different advertising campaign for kids is currently airing on kid-targeted programming.
