Burger King-sponsored Fox Sports sketch draws criticism

October 12, 2009

A Burger King-sponsored cartoon during this weekend's pre-game coverage on "Fox NFL Sunday" has drawn criticism for its tasteless jokes about celebrity Jessica Simpson's weight gain, according to a story by Advertising Age. The cartoon includes two Dallas Cowboys players and coach Wade Phillips making jokes about quarterback Tony Romo and Simpson, his former girlfriend.

Fox apparently wrote and produced the skit, part of a regular series that includes Burger King's name at the beginning, and Burger King does not approve the sketches, AdAge reported. The sketch apparently missed its mark with at least one audience, as the Dallas-Fort Worth-area NBC affiliate NBCDFW.com reported that local viewers voting on the spot said 45 percert of them were furious, 27 percent bored, 18 percent laughing and 9 percent thrilled.

From Advertising Age:
Weight jokes associated with a fast-food chain just strike us as dumb no matter how you look at it. Consider the Whopper. The sandwich has 19 Weight Watchers points, or just under the average daily goal. Adding fries and a small shake would take you up to 45 points, or more than the average woman should consume in two days. Laughing yet?
