Carl's Jr., Hardee's Q3 gains down

CARPINTERIA, Calif. — Blended same-store sales at CKE Restaurants Inc., parent company of Carl's Jr. and Hardee's, were up 0.9 percent for the third quarter ended Nov. 3, the company has announced. At Carl's Jr, same-store sales increased 0.5 percent and 1.3 percent at Hardee's. Year to date, comps at Carl's Jr. were up 2.9 percent, while Hardee's were up 1.1 percent.
CKE saw a reduction in net income of 12 percent for the third quarter with earnings of $5.4 million, compared with $6.2 million for the same period last year. Year-to-date net income was up 10.6 percent to $34.3 million, compared with $31 million last year.
Consolidated revenue for the quarter was $336.6 million, down 4.3 percent from the prior year's third quarter. Year-to-date revenue was down 3 percent to $1.16 billion, compared to $1.2 billion last year.
Hardee's refranchised 118 restaurants and opened 25 new company-owned stores since the beginning of the third quarter last year.
Period 11 comps
For the four weeks ended Dec. 1, blended comps were up 0.3 percent, compared to 2.8 percent in the same period last year. Carl's Jr.'s comps were up 0.1 percent, and Hardee's were up 0.5 percent.
During the period, Carl's Jr. featured the Big Country Breakfast Burrito and its line of Guacamole Bacon burgers. The Guacamole Bacon Six Dollar Burger features a charbroiled, 100 percent Black Angus beef patty topped with made-fresh-in-store guacamole, two strips of bacon, two slices of Pepperjack cheese, Santa Fe sauce, red onions, tomato and lettuce on a seeded bun.
Hardee's promoted Little Thickburgers, a quarter-pound sized version of the standard one-third-pound Thickburger and Cheese Thickburger, and the Pork Chop 'N' Gravy Biscuit, a boneless, breaded pork chop topped with sausage gravy on Made From Scratch buttermilk biscuits.
CKE will report same-store sales results for period 12 ending Dec. 29 on or about Jan. 7, 2009.
