Although Carl's Jr. is based in Tennessee, where marijuana is not yet legal, the chain became the first major U.S. fast-food joint to create and sell a cannabis-infused burger when it launched the Rocky Mountain High Cheese Burger Delight Saturday in Denver. The burger, which featured two beef patties, pickled jalapenos, pepper jack cheese, a layer of French fries and Santa Fe Sauce made with CBD oil, sold out by late afternoon, according to Sputniknews.
The Denver location had a line at its drive-thru prior to its 6 a.m opening Saturday, also known as 4-20, a holiday celebrated by pot enthusiasts.
"As soon as we opened the doors we had about 30 people in line and about ten cars deep [in the drive-thru] so we hit the ground running," the chain’s district manager, Alex McConnell, said in an interview published on Leafly.com.
The location sold 102 Rocky Mountain High burgers within the its first hour, was up to 274 by 9 a.m. and sold out by 4 p.m. The burger sold for $4.20.
Colorado-based Bluebird Botanicals was the supplier for the hemp-derived CBD oil.
As of press time, Carls' Jr. had not responded to a request for comment.
