Dunkin': 'Does that cappuccino truly elevate your jelly-filled cake?'

March 23, 2017

The Doughnut is to coffee how wine is to cheese, according to Dunkin' Donuts, which is hoping to elevate the customer experience by pairing the flavor nuances of some of its doughnuts with coffee flavors.

According to a company press release, pairings include the:

  • Chocolate-pretzel-butter-pecan experience, which combines the chain's new chocolate pretzel doughnut and its caramel-pretzel topping with its butter pecan coffee. The pairing is supposed to bring out the doughnut's salty sweetness while helping to balance the coffee's notes of sweetness and nuttiness.
  • Peanut Butter Delight Croissant Doughnuts, which include peanut butter buttercream-filled, chocolate-drizzled croissant doughnuts alongside Dunkin's cold-brew coffee. The combo allows the subtle chocolate "notes" in the coffee to come forward.

On the beverage side of the fence, aside from the aforementioned butter pecan coffee, the brand is also ushering in a coconut creme pie iced coffee that mixes vanilla and coconut with the flavor of sweet pie crust. Fruited teas are also back with black or green tea bases augmented by fruit juice and bits of mango, pineapple and blackberries.

And for the doughnut purist, there's still  the return of the spring flowers doughnut, as well as a pretzel croissant breakfast sandwich with bacon, egg and white cheddar on a pretzel croissant. In fact, the chain is introducing its first national Snapchat filter on March 30 with four "time-of-day" themes for fans who want to show and tell about their upscale doughnut experiences. .
