That scent you smell in the air is nothing other than the precursor to that Hole-y-est of holidays — National Doughnut Day, which takes place this Friday in the U.S.
The fact that the day is a completely made-up holiday has no effect on top doughnut brands of Dunkin' and Krispy Kreme, both of which are giving away the tubular treats to celebrate their special day, according to press releases.
At Dunkin, the brand's restaurants are giving customers one free classic doughnut of their choice with a drink purchase, at least while supplies last. The classics here include Boston Kreme, Glazed, Glazed Chocolate and jelly-filled, among others. In fact, the brand is making it possible for patrons to actually be a doughnut thanks to the Thursday 12 p.m. EST time launch of the brand's #NationalDonutDay collection, featuring limited-edition customizable doughnut-themed items like sweatshirts, T-shirts and tote bags.
And of course, there's a social media component to all this with special content planned for Dunkin's Instagram and TikTok channels and a request to customers to pick their favorite doughnut and share it across all the brand's social media outlets.
Meanwhile, over at North Carolina-based Krispy Kreme — which also announced Tuesday that it would go public again — they're tying the freebies to COVID-19 vaccinations, offering those who've obtained the shots two doughnuts in return.
On Friday all Krispy Kreme customers can get a free doughnut of their choice with no purchase needed, and those who show proof of vaccination (a valid vaccination card) get a free original glazed doughtnut as well.
The brand said its doughnuts for vaccinations program has given away more than 1.5 million doughnuts since March 22.
Based in Winston-Salem, Krispy Kreme has 1,400 stories in 33 countries.
