SANTA MONICA, Calif. (March 17) - Quick-service sandwich chain Fatburger plans to add two company-operated and 20 franchised stores by year-end, including units in new markets in the South and East, director of franchise relations Michelle Wilkins said. Franchisees, who operate 31 of the brand's 54 units, expanded the Santa Monica-based chain to Colorado and Florida in 2003 and will open in Georgia, Louisiana, New Jersey and Pennsylvania this year, Wilkins said. She declined to divulge sales performance for the chain in 2003. Fatburger has commitments for 200 stores in approximately 22 new markets to open by 2008, she said, noting that the company sought multi-unit developers with the financial resources to open a minimum of 10 stores within five years, rather than operators with restaurant experience. Fatburgers also operate in Arizona, California, Nevada and Washington.
